Entry into force of the EU AI Act (20 days after publication)

Prohibited AI Practices: The prohibitions (Art. 5 AI Act) become effective – from this point on, prohibited applications may no longer be operated.
May 2025
AI Codes of Conduct: Expected completion of first codes of conduct for AI (within ~9 months) supported by the AI Office to promote best practices, particularly for non-regulated AI. (voluntary, no direct legal obligation for companies)
August 2025
Foundation Models: Special obligations for providers of General Purpose AI (e.g., large generative models) apply from 12 months after entry into force. Providers of such models must have implemented the required transparency and security measures by then.
1 August 2026
Applicability of Most Requirements: After a transition period of 24 months, most other provisions of the AI Act come into force. In particular, from this date all newly placed on the market high-risk AI systems must meet the above requirements (including conformity assessment, CE marking, etc.). Companies must make their AI systems compliant by then.
1 August 2027
Transition Period for Existing AI: Final deadline for some specific requirements in the high-risk area. Particularly for AI systems already existing before entry into force or certain complex requirements, the AI Act grants a total of 36 months. By August 2027 at the latest, all AI systems within scope must be fully AI Act compliant.
